A 1–10x LPVO offers more top-end magnification, but a 1–6x can be the better choice if you value a simpler range and comfortable viewing at the powers you use most. More magnification is useful only when the additional enlargement helps you see the detail you need.
What the numbers mean
Both formats begin at a nominal 1x setting. A 1–6x extends to 6x; a 1–10x extends to 10x. In a conventional variable-power rifle scope, magnification changes optically. This differs from digital enlargement on a digital night vision device.

Think about exit pupil and eye position
Exit pupil is approximately the objective diameter divided by magnification. For example, a 24 mm objective produces about a 4 mm exit pupil at 6x and 2.4 mm at 10x. This is one reason higher magnification can feel more demanding about eye position and available light. Exit pupil is only part of viewing comfort; the complete optical design matters.

Compare the reticle, not just the power range
FFP reticles change apparent size with magnification. SFP reticles remain the same apparent size, and their measurement references are calibrated at a specified power. Consider how easily you can see the center at low power and how much of the view the pattern occupies at high power.
